AVAILABLE POSITION: Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow, Program on the Environment

DURATION: June 2012 – June 2013

We are seeking applicants to join the Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow program at the Program on the Environment. Applicants should be committed to interdisciplinary teaching within an environmental context and wish to further their career in teaching and curriculum development. This position will teach or co-teach one course each term (Au/Wi/Sp). Courses will include lower level (100 through 300) core courses and also include opportunities to design and deliver an upper level (400) course. The successful applicant will begin in June 2012.

Postdoctoral teaching fellows are mentored by the Director of PoE. In addition to course preparation, emphasis is put on teaching pedagogy and on working in an interdisciplinary, experiential learning environment. Weekly meetings with the Director and core teaching faculty and staff are used to innovate across core courses and provide a dynamic sounding board for new ideas.

Assessing the Habitability of Mars:
Exploring Gale Crater with the Curiosity Rover

The Curiosity Rover is now headed for Mars and is scheduled for an August 5th landing. This car-sized rover carries a powerful combination of geological, chemical, and imaging tools designed to spend the next two years investigating the Red Planet’s potential habitability. Dr. Conrad will give a presentation and answer questions about the landing site inside Gale Crater and how the scientific team for Curiosity is approaching the exciting task of evaluating whether or not Mars is or has ever been capable of supporting life.

Dr. Pamela “Pan” Conrad is a Research Space Scientist with the Planetary Environments Lab at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. She is deputy Principal Investigator of the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) Investigation on the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission, presently en route to Mars, as well as Co-Investigator with the Virtual Planetary Lab (VPL), headquartered at the University of Washington.
